Captain's Bio

In 1992, I had the privilege of serving as a summer intern for the Superior National Forest in Tofte, MN, where I was introduced to fishing on the Great Lakes under the guidance of Jerry, a renowned fish biologist and the area's most skilled angler. It didn’t take long for me to recognize that this was an extraordinary opportunity, and I made it a point to absorb as much knowledge as possible. Jerry, in turn, generously shared his extensive expertise on fishing the vast waters of the Great Lakes.
This experience sparked a lifelong passion for fishing, which ultimately led me to a fulfilling 23-year career as a Fisheries Technician. Over the years, I gained invaluable experience through direct involvement in numerous studies, including those of Lake Superior, the St. Louis River Estuary, Mille Lacs Lake, Gunflint Lake, and various other bodies of water. My work encompassed a diverse range of species, from lake sturgeon to walleye, and from catfish to bluegills.
While conducting laboratory analyses on fish samples was both important and engaging, I never lost my desire to be on the water, feeling the wind in my face and the lines taut with fish. Much like Jerry in 1992, I found great joy in sharing my fishing knowledge with others—particularly in teaching the different techniques required for each season on Lake Superior. Even more rewarding was witnessing the excitement of anglers as they reeled in their catches, creating unforgettable memories on the water
After six years as a part-time charter fishing captain, I realized that the joy I derived from seeing clients’ happiness could no longer be confined to weekends. In 2021, I retired from my career in fisheries management to pursue full-time guiding. For nearly a decade, I have been passing down my passion and expertise to my two sons, who share my enthusiasm for the fishing industry. Recently, my youngest son earned his Captain’s License and added a new boat to our growing fleet
A quote that resonated with me for years was one posted by a former colleague on his office door: "One measure of success in life is a permanent sign on your door that says: 'Gone Fishing.'" I’m fortunate to now live that reality. I would be honored to share with you the knowledge that Jerry passed on to me, and much more. So, come aboard the Chamorrita and let’s make some lasting memories on the largest freshwater lake in the world. You won’t regret it!

Captain Sean Thompson, at your service.
