Captain's Bio

In 1992 I was a summer intern for the Superior National Forest in Tofte, MN, and that’s when I started fishing the Great Lakes under the teachings of fish biologist and best angler in the area, Jerry. I quickly realized that this was a special opportunity and I should pay close attention, and he was happy to impart everything he knew about fishing the big water.

Later, I turned my passion for fishing into a rewarding 23-year career as a Fisheries Technician, and gained overwhelming knowledge and experience. I was personally involved in several studies of Lake Superior and the St. Louis River Estuary, as well as Mille Lacs Lake, Gunflint Lake and many more in-between. I worked on everything from lake sturgeon to walleye and from catfish to bluegills.

While analyzing fish samples in the lab was important and interesting, I couldn’t shake my desire to have the wind in my face and my fishing lines tight. Like Jerry in 1992, I enjoyed spending time with people and teaching them what I knew about fishing- such as the various methods for catching during the different seasons that Lake Superior has to offer. Even more importantly, I love watching anglers catch fish and have the time of their life doing it!

After 6 years as a part-time charter fishing captain, the smiles on their faces as they took pictures of their trophies convinced me that this couldn’t remain just a weekend gig- it needed to be full time. So in 2021, I retired from my career and began guiding full-time. I’ve been teaching my two sons the business of fishing for nearly a decade, and we share an appreciation for the variety of clients we get to work with on a daily basis. My youngest son has recently acquired his own Captain’s License and boat- our fleet is growing!

A former co-worker had a sign on his door that I read every day as I walked by: “One measure of success in life is a permanent sign on your door that says: “Gone Fishing.” How true is that! I consider myself lucky that I no longer just read that sign- I’m living it! I would love to teach you everything that Jerry taught me, and more. So hang that “Gone Fishing” sign on your door and join us aboard the Chamorrita for a wonderful day out on the largest freshwater lake in the world.  You will not be disappointed!

Captain Sean Thompson, at your service.
